Fire extinguishers are essential safety devices in the UK, required in nearly all commercial, industrial, and public premises under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

Their primary purpose is to allow occupants to tackle small fires before they escalate, helping to reduce risk to life and property.

Different types of extinguishers are designed to combat specific fire classes, including Class A (solid combustibles like wood and paper), Class B (flammable liquids), Class C (flammable gases), Class D (flammable metals), and electrical fires. In the UK, the most commonly found extinguishers include water, foam, CO₂, dry powder, and wet chemical types.

UK regulations stipulate that extinguishers must be maintained in good working order and should be serviced annually by a qualified technician.

They must also be easily accessible and clearly labelled, with appropriate signage indicating their location and the types of fires they are suitable for.

Businesses are required to conduct a fire risk assessment and ensure that the correct types and numbers of extinguishers are available, depending on the nature of the premises and the fire hazards present. Importantly, staff should also be trained on how and when to use extinguishers safely.
