Foam fire extinguishers are versatile and commonly used in the UK for tackling Class A (solid materials like wood, paper, and textiles) and Class B (flammable liquids such as petrol and paint) fires. These extinguishers contain an aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) that blankets the fire, cooling it and cutting off the oxygen supply to prevent re-ignition.
Easily recognisable by their cream label, foam extinguishers are ideal for use in a wide range of environments, including offices, warehouses, garages, petrol stations, and public buildings.

Some models are MED (Marine Equipment Directive) approved, meaning they a legal requirement for any vessel that flies an EU member states (incl. UK) flag. E.g. Passenger Ferries, Cargo Ships, Tankers, fishing boats etc.
Foam extinguishers in the UK must meet BS EN 3 standards and should be installed and maintained according to British Standard BS 5306. Annual servicing by a certified technician is required to ensure they remain in proper working order.
While foam is an excellent all-round extinguisher, it is not suitable for use on Class F fires (cooking oils and fats) or fires involving reactive metals.
